The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's first goal, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to guarantee the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of the field

After a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only two shots on goal, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - added his second in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have worn off somewhat and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised strikers - had scored just one league goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler shot that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Spurs box.
